Balance: A life worth living
By Kristi Welch: Mom, Wife, Friend, Human-Being
My story starts back at the beginning, like most mom’s do, at the moment I had 2 little boys and a life to live. I distinctly remember being at a park when they were very young and teaching them how to work a see-saw. I watched as they maneuvered their little bodies to achieve the ‘perfect’ balance point. They laughed with pride as they achieved the magic moment when both of them could see ‘eye’ to ‘eye’ across the see-saw at each other….balance….
Unfortunately, the magical moment was fleeting and they quickly fell back to the ground. Just like my life did on a daily basis. In trying to juggle all the different aspects of being a mom, cook, cleaner, psychologist, chauffer….(we all know the lingo and list of daily chores we struggle to achieve on a daily basis)…I couldn’t keep balance in my own life, let alone try to teach it to my children. So life went on, my juggling act continued to waiver and the kids continued to grow-up.
Then came the fate-full, tear-filled day….they started school. They came home one day wanting an allowance; like their friends, and requested specific dollar amounts. Initially, I thought ‘wow’ they are growing up, I am going to teach them about responsibility, how to ‘earn’ and ‘manage’ their money, etc. I had all great intentions and made a list of items they had to accomplish, including: homework, chores, exercise (all things great mom’s tell their precious children to do). But that is where it all stopped, because they became very creative at not accomplishing many of the items on the list. I became overwhelmed with my juggling act and found myself paying allowance or not (mainly depending on my mood at the moment….never a good thing for a mom to do). So anger, confusion and frustration became the new motto for our household….balance was no-where to be seen.
Frazzled and frustrated I did what most mothers do….I calmed down….after a few glasses of wine….and began picking up the shattered pieces of my life. Quitting, as we know, is not an option so onward and hopefully upward we move. In reviewing the items in my life that caused me the most stress….shockingly….my kids were at the top of my list. Mainly because they are the most rewarding, loving, frustrating and irresponsible creatures we come in contact with and they are a reflection of ourselves. So by creating a more balanced existence in my life, my theory was, it would create a more balanced growth opportunity for them too!!
I began to sit down with pen and paper and drafted the 3 key areas of life that are key to living a balanced existence: Mind, Body and Spirit if we have a healthy awareness and respect for these critical aspects we can create a life of happiness and magic. So, how can we take these obvious and simple concepts and make them kid friendly, mother approved and hassle free……bring on technology
The system you are about to review, and I really hope you like, teaches children how to manage and co-create their own life. Our goal is to make a ‘joint’ cohesive way for children and parents to work together to create common goals and individual pathways to obtain them. The system focuses on: nutrition, exercise and chores a triangle of balance that guides healthy habits, teaches responsibility and opens up a portal for joint communication and ownership in meeting these daily expectations. You will find automated reports that will come to you as the parent keeping you informed on your children’s progress. Your child will have incentives to obtain through their efforts and feedback on their individual performance. This simple, effective on-line tool will make achieving life skills easy and fun for adults and children.
Since I started using this system with my sons’, life has found a rhythm and I no longer feel so overwhelmed and frustrated. We talk more, fight less and have a common vision in how to live a balanced life. So, join me in this journey, I will walk along side you and together we can create a world for our children that reflects who we are and who we long to be…..a balanced…..human being…..
